Back in business this week.
Of course, still somewhat adjusting from the craziest week of my life (link to my personal update here in case you missed it), but getting into a good groove.
I spent some time over the weekend getting caught up and formalizing more of my plan for the next few months, here is some of what I’ve got:
Themes for the year on the business side: simplifying, spending more time on fewer things/businesses, and cashflow.
In terms of businesses, and also as a refresh for those who don’t know the businesses I’m working on, here they are and how I’ll be focusing on them:
Visto - this is my immigration tech startup that I cofounded ~4 years ago. We’ve built a platform that uses AI and automation to help Canadian immigration firms practice more efficiently. We’ll continue building more features and AI tools especially to help more firms save time and get more done with less. I’m still super bullish on legal tech so I’m excited for the year ahead.
My law firm - I still have a small firm of my own which helps me stay up-to-date with the legal side and the extra money doesn’t hurt. The big change here is I’m actually going to try expanding my practice beyond immigration. That industry has changed so much recently (not in a good way) and, after 8 years of it, gotten a bit boring from my experience, so I’m starting to take on some family law files too. If you know anyone in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) looking for help there, let me know!
This Substack/Solopreneur Grind podcast - I love email list building and podcasting, especially because I love talking about business and sharing my journey. I’ll continue to do so on this email list, interviewing other solopreneurs for the podcast, and helping a very small group of you through my business coaching. I only work with up to 3 solopreneurs at a time on a monthly basis - and only have 1 slot open right now - but if you do want more 1-on-1 support from me, let me know.
So that’s it in terms of my core businesses and focuses for the year.
The other thing I did over the weekend was lay out my social media and content creation plan because, as usual, organic content creation is going to be the main driver for all 3 of those businesses in terms of marketing and lead generation.
I’ll share more about my content creation focuses in one of the next few emails, but I think in 2025, quality content and building a genuine following will continue to be the best strategy for growth for any business.
AI is starting to kill SEO and it’s also spitting out so much crap content. Those of us who commit to posting consistent, personal, helpful content will win in the long run.
Do you agree?
And make sure you’re doing what I did every once in a while. Setting overall themes for your quarter/year, and then diving into more specific focuses and goals for each. From there, you can flesh out weekly and then daily activities so you’re actually making progress.
And if you need 1-on-1 help from me to do it, just hit “reply” and let me know.
Have a great day,
- Josh Schachnow
